They look similar in the store, but luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and laminate behave very differently once they're on your floor — especially in a Canadian home with basements, boots and spills. Here's how they actually compare.
The short answer
If moisture is anywhere in the picture — basements, kitchens, entryways, bathrooms, or a busy family home — luxury vinyl plank is usually the better choice. If you want the most realistic wood look at the lowest cost in a dry, low-traffic room, laminate can still make sense. Below is the detail.
Water resistance
This is the biggest difference. Quality LVP is waterproof — its core doesn't swell when it gets wet, so it shrugs off spills, mopping and humidity. Laminate has a fibreboard (wood-based) core; even "water-resistant" laminate can swell and lift at the seams if water sits on it. In a GTA basement or a home with kids and pets, that matters.
Durability & feel
Laminate typically has a very hard, scratch-resistant wear layer and feels firm and solid underfoot. LVP is a bit softer and warmer, quieter to walk on, and more forgiving on dropped dishes. Both handle everyday traffic well; laminate edges out slightly on surface scratch resistance, while LVP wins on dents and moisture.
Cost
They overlap a lot. Entry-level laminate is often the cheapest option, but good LVP has come down in price and frequently lands in the same range. The bigger cost driver on any job is subfloor prep — an uneven subfloor undermines either product, so it's worth doing right.
Where each one shines
- Choose LVP for: basements, kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, rentals, and anywhere moisture or heavy use is likely.
- Choose laminate for: dry bedrooms, living rooms and hallways where you want a hard, realistic wood look on a tight budget.
